ABOUT
A unique mission and location
Set on a lush two-acre campus in the heart of historic Santa Barbara, California, the Alta Vista Foundation exists to provide an affordable home for active, deserving Christian Scientists 55 and up.
Rent is subsidized and based on need.
The 30-apartment enclave of like-minded Christian Scientists offers a safe and supportive home as well an unparalleled location for a richly adventurous lifestyle.
Alta Vista was endowed in 1965 by C. Eileen Chambers, a local Santa Barbara Christian Scientist who felt that “more suitable homes are needed for elderly, deserving and needy Christian Scientists and that such homes should be located away from large cities and industrial centers.”
Alta Vista was registered as a charitable trust in 1969. Mrs. Chamber’s gift allowed the 1969 purchase of, and upkeep on, the current campus, a former sea captain’s home. Her gift also has allowed the institution to subsidize rents for those in need since the first residents moved in.
The Alta Vista Foundation is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, and relies on donations to continue its mission. It is administered by a fulltime manager living on site and a board of trustees.
